We'll begin our journey in Monteriggioni, a fortified castle erected by the Republic of Siena as an outpost for protection from the Florentines, but also to defend the nearby section of the Via Francigena.

We’ll walk along the ring wall mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divina Commediachildren in your group will particularly enjoy trying on the heavy armor of Medieval knights in the village museum.

Then it’s on to nearby Abbadia Isola, a splendid abbey founded in 1001 and an important landmark along the Via Francigena.

For lunch, we’ll stop in a tiny Medieval burg on a side road of the Francigena, graced with a little Romanesque church, and in the afternoon we’ll head to San Gimignano, which owed its 13th-century flowering to its location along pilgrim road.
